Mourning in America #1
Simon Johnston, 2017
edition of 20 monoprints
Made on the day of the U.S. presidential inauguration, this edition appropriates the front pages of newspapers from January 20, 2017. However, apart from the masthead and date, their contents have been overprinted in black printer’s ink. Two versions were made, using the New York Times (v.23) and the Los Angeles Times (v.24). These prints were partially inspired by the seventeenth-century English convention of mourning pages or solid-black printed fields sometimes used in funeral sermons or memorial verse, and, more famously, the black page in Laurence Sterne’s novel Tristram Shandy (1759).
